Welcome to blog! I started it in 2020 to chart my recovery from breaking my ankle (hence the name). I guess no-one saw a global pandemic coming. It's turned into a place where I can talk about the things happening in my life, my horse and my cats. Enjoy!
It took me nearly an hour to get there, but I am now double jabbed. In fact it took less time to jab me than it took for me to leave the village. 🤦🏻♀️
The traffic was so busy today. And not just in the roadworks. It should have taken 20 mins or so. Today it was triple that. Still got there eventually. Now have a sore arm, but feeling OK so far. 👏🏻
I got late birthday present today. It was a bit spooky. I had a voicemail from a friend while I was away at camp. I tried calling her back this morning and with that she walked round the corner. Coffee in one hand and this fab present in the other.
It was great to catch up with her. And I’m looking forward to filling this in. 👏🏻 Love a bit of motivation.
After our best day at camp, this wasn’t quite the way I planned to finish it. Sadly my little lorry broke down on the way back. Thankfully was able to limp to a garage and didn’t breakdown in the contraflow on the A47.
A wonderful friend came to rescue Buddy. My main concern was that he was OK. Bless him he was such a good boy walking off my lorry and onto hers in the middle of the busy forecourt.
I can’t fault NFU Mutual. They were brilliant. Kept me informed every step of the way and checked that we were both OK.
The BP staff were the same. Even giving me a free hot drink while I waited for the recovery lorry.
The same can’t be said a few of the next door McDonalds customers who made their feelings known about choice of parking spot. It wasn’t like I had much choice?!
Buddy and I are both home safely and that’s what matters. The lorry can be fixed. And we had a brilliant time away.
Day 2 of our training camp and happy to report with had a much better day, with no dramas. 😊 Well my little lorry has sprung a leak so woke up with a wet pillow. The rain was so loud last night. Least we didn’t have the thunderstorm that was forecast.
2 great lessons today and a ton of learnings. Thankfully it was cooler too. Even had to break out a hoodie!! Bizarre after being so hot yesterday.
Buddy and I still burned a few calories. He deserved some grazing time. And I definitely earned my veggie lasagne and garlic bread. 👏🏻
Pretty sure that’s meant to be on your foot Buddy?!
Day 1 of training camp has been interesting. One of us was hot to trot and one of us was just plain hot! I’ll let you decide which one was which. 😂
Thankfully Buddy lost his shoe at the end of our second lesson. Emergency farrier later, we’re back to 4 shoes ready for tomorrow’s lessons. He does like to keep me on my toes.
It’s been baking here today. Hoping for a cooler day tomorrow. She says as she can hear rain on the lorry roof….☔️
Arrived safe and sound in preparation for our 3 day training camp. Took much longer than expected due to roadworks and my rather foolish plan to try and circumnavigate them. Would have been quicker to have stayed in the queue. 🤦🏻♀️
Still we’re all settled in for the night. Buddy seems to love B&B. Not sure if that’s just cause he gets haylage?!
Looking forward to learning lots in our 6 lessons. Bring it on…
I was a bit wrung out today after yesterday’s event. Spent the morning cleaning out the lorry, doing the washing (mostly his) and getting ready to head off to a training camp tomorrow. Found his XC boots, so they are now back where they live.
I’ve had a chance to process the goings on yesterday. Let’s face it there was a lot to process. I’m getting my head round it now. I’ve seen that most people in my section had dressage scores in the 40s. So I don’t feel quite as bad about it. Still don’t feel it was a fair score for our test, but can’t change it now.
The rest I can work on. I know where we can improve. There were improvements on last time. We stepped up a level. It’s not going to go right straightaway.
And I did get a lovely photo. Always a bonus. Another one for the wall of fame. To remind me we can still achieve things, even in the face of adversity, the deck stacked against us and the blistering heat.
Think Buddy is good with the height. Just needs to pick his feet up. 😂 Is it me or does 80cm look tiny?!
Strap in, this could be a long one. Today we headed to Blackwater for our latest ODE. It was a scorcher for sure! Not our day as we were thwarted a lot today.
Decided to step up to the 80cm. We’ve been jumping them well in practise so thought it would be OK.
Now the advantage to doing the bigger class is that you don’t have to be up at the crack of dawn. Or plait the night before. Well this totally threw me. Woke up and didn’t know what to do with myself.
Probably the worst plaiting job I’ve ever done as I was a bit thrown by it all. Still off we headed. Secretly I was hoping for clouds and a stiff breeze by the time we arrived.
Parked up and was promptly told that the space was reserved. So I had to move. Finally found a space but on the wrong side to where I usually parked. So that threw me and I lost the lorry several times during the day.
Undeterred I tacked up and headed to dressage to warm up. Checked in with the steward and was told my ring. As I was walking into the warm up (trust me I was a lot hotter than warm already), I spotted the rider behind me had the same number. Seems mine had changed and I didn’t know.
That meant my times had changed too. So did my ring. Then it got changed back again. Slightly off putting. Not the best warm up I ever done.
But an OK test. I thought we’d done a decent job. Buddy was calm and so was I.
The judge didn’t agree though and gave us our worst ever score 47%. I’m really disappointment with that given the hard work I’ve been putting in with our flatwork. I guess she can only judge what she sees.
Bit of a wait till SJ meant I had time to correct my number and find out what my times should be. As I was on my own, I thought I’d get everything ready for my XC change over. Only to find that I’d left his XC boots at home. The advantage of a lorry is that you can leave everything onboard. That only works when you actually put them back after cleaning them. Managed to borrow some backs. And used my SJ fronts.
That sorted, it was time to tack up again. Buddy was flying in the SJ warm up. So I felt really good going into the ring. Buddy had other ideas and entered in feral mode. While we jumped them all, he sent a lot of them flying. Not even sure how many we had down.
Still at least we jumped them at the first attempt.
Quick turnaround for XC. Got halfway up to the warm up and realised I hadn’t put my body protector on. Seriously?! My brain had fried in the heat I think!!
Again we warmed up beautifully. Buddy locked on to all of the jumps. Headed to the start feeling good again. Then there was a hold on the course and the ambulance went heading off. Thankfully horse and rider were OK.
Once we got the green light again, we got moving again. Timed it a few seconds too quick so nearly headed off on 2. Managed to hold long enough for the go.
Buddy headed out of the start box brilliantly and stormed 1 & 2. He was eyes on stalks most of the way round so more interesting lines and another silly stop (I really need to learn to kick).
It was bloody hard work keeping it all together. It was ridiculously hot. So I could have done without being told off by one the the jump judges for swearing. Didn’t know there was a rule about that?! It wasn’t like I was swearing at her or beating my horse!
But we made it round.
Another cricket score to add to the collection.
I’m frustrated and disappointed by today. I know it’s horses. I know Eventing is bloody hard work. It’s really difficult to get everything right. I’m not ashamed to say I cried most of the way home.
I try so hard and put in the hard work. When it doesn’t go your way, it’s really hard to take in that moment.
II’m overtired, over hot and over emotional. I’ll bounce back. I always do.
Today we started together, finished together and did some stuff in between.
When you’re dancing around the garden and you accidentally take a photo. 🤦🏻♀️
After a dressage lesson last night, a show jumping lesson this morning and a few hours in the garden, it’s a bit of a surprise I’ve got the energy to dance around. Music really does get me moving though. It’s been ages since I had a good dance.
For a few nights now, I’ve been woken up by loud bumps on the roof. I assumed it was pigeons as they tend to land with the grace of a baby elephant.
This morning there was a loud bang on the conservatory roof. Imagine my surprise when I looked up and saw Hugo!! It seems he’s worked out how to climb onto my bungalow roof.
He looked rather pleased with himself as he wandered around up there. He wasn’t quite as graceful climbing down. I may have a few more scratches to add to the collection…
