When I went to Simon Grieve’s demo a while back, I was given a hi-viz by one of his sponsors. Trouble was it was far too big for me.

Luckily I have a friend with a sewing machine (or 10) so I headed over to hers this afternoon and she made it smaller for me. It looks much better now.

It’ll come in very handy as you honestly can’t have enough hi-viz when out riding. I usually have yellow, so orange will make a nice change. Besides, Buddy is fed on Muscle & Focus so we’ll be on brand.

I also bought some black out material so that I could cover the skylight in my lorry. Now I’ve never been very good on volume. I ordered quite a lot it seems. I measured the skylight, but didn’t have enough space to cut it out onboard. Again, my lovely friend has a cutting table. And a very natty fabric cutter. It looked like a pizza wheel. Only for fabric. Who knew?!

She even let me have a go on her super duper sewing machine. After getting over a few concerns about messing it up, I really enjoyed it. It’s been a very long time since I did any sewing on a machine. My sewing machine is very old. It was made in 1916! My Mum gave it to me one birthday. It’s a hand operated one, so using an electric one felt very speedy. Think that was part of my concerns. I was afraid the fabric would run away.

I’d forgotten how much fun it is. I’ve got enough material left to cover the other windows. But they can go on the Winter list. I might put a few more things on that list now I know I can be trusted with a sewing machine. And yes, I did wear my hi-viz. Just in case. Well I was around sharp things…

So 2020 was going to be my year. The year I got my life sorted after being served redundancy notice from my job in November 2019. The year I ticked off more things from my horsey bucket list. The year I got my mental health back under control and reduced stress in my life. I had a plan. And it was a good one. Then the plan changed dramatically on 2 January. I came off my horse at speed and broke my ankle. Badly. Like all good equestrians, I got back on and rode back to the yard, sorted Buddy out and then drove myself to A&E. That’s where this journey really began... I was sent home from A&E and told to crack on, only to receive a phone call later to say they’d missed a fracture (and a rather serious one at that). Whoops! So fracture clinic on 3 January, surgery on 5 January and home to recover. I started this blog as a way to chart my recover back to the saddle. As I cleared clinics and competitions out of my diary and wondered what the next few months would bring, it's been a safe space for me to say how I'm feeling. The new plan was to get a new job, to keep Buddy is kept ticking over and recover from my injury. Another good plan! I didn't expect a global pandemic, lockdown and all that happened in 2020. This blog has changed over time but it's continued to be my safe space to share the things going on in my life, with Buddy and the cats. Enjoy!
